Emergency Pre-hospital Care and Education

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you need other people to become First Responders?
A: We are always in need of people who can commit the time and energy that it takes to be a First Responder.  We train regularly and have to commit to at least 32 hours as a responder per month.  If it interests you, see "How to become a First Responder."

Q: Do you offer First Aid Courses?
A: Yes! We currently have First Aid Courses as well as CPR Courses.  Both of these are certified by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Quebec.  Check our our Courses page to find out exactly what is available an when.

Q: Are First Responders paid personnel?
A: All First Responders in Saint Lazare are volunteers who give a minimum of 32 hours each month; most volunteer much more.  Across the first responder system in Quebec, there are variations in the use of paid personnel and volunteers.

Q: If I am sick or injured, can I call the First Responders to help?
A: If you need medical help, you should dial "911."  The First responders may be sent to assist you, as well as an ambulance.  This is the only way to have the First Responders visit you.

Q: My organization is having a special event.  Could the First Responders be present in case there is a medical emergency?
A: The First Responders are, first and foremost, responsible for providing emergency medical assistance to the entire Ville de Saint Lazare day and night.  This makes it impossible for us to stand-by at all the events that request our presence.  We can often refer you to another company that offers stand-by medics.  You are nonetheless very welcome to make a request for our services by email or by calling 514 455 5824.  Of course, if there is ever a medical emergency at your event, you should call 911 to have the appropriate assistance come directly to you.

Q: I called 911 but the First Responders didn't come.  Why not?
A: The First Responders are dispatched by Alerte Santé.  When a  call comes in to Alerte Santé, the dispatcher assigns it a priority level.  If it is one of the 2 highest priority levels, the dispatcher will page the First Responders in Saint Lazare and we will go to the caller's aid.  There are some 911 calls, however, to which first responders are not dispatched.  In fact, when we are not paged, the First Responders won't even know that there is a call in Saint Lazare.
